UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW

IAMC’s involvement with UPR at UN Human Rights Council is more than half a decade old. In 2012, the last time India’s record was reviewed, IAMC had partnered with The Advocates for Human Rights from Minneapolis and Jamia Teachers’ Solidarity Association (JTSA) of New Delhi. Our impact had been substantial as at least one of the recommendations that the UN Working Group had made to the Indian government in 2012 was taken wholly from the joint report by these three organizations. For 2017, IAMC increased the number of reports filed from one in 2012 to two. We also added two other organizations to our list of partners, Citizens for Justice and Peace of Mumbai and The Quill Foundation of New Delhi. One report was filed jointly by IAMC, The Advocates, JTSA and Quill Foundation. The second report was filed by IAMC and CJP, which is the organization of Teesta Setalvad. Both Teesta and Ajit Sahi met with diplomats from a dozen countries. They then also went to Geneva to do advocacy with diplomats there of many other countries. Our diplomacy received wide support, so much so that IAMC got a two-minute speaking slot on the floor of the UNHRC, for which we chose to have Teesta address the Council. This was a historic occasion. Before India’s UPR on May 4, IAMC’s reports were given widespread coverage by top Indian news media, including Outlook India, The Hindu, DNA, Business Standard, and several others, which is very encouraging especially because the Indian news media has been reluctant to publish antigovernment news especially since Narendra Modi came to power. IAMC’s involvement with the UPR process has been crucial for the advancement of the human rights agenda.

MINORITY RIGHTS VIOLATIONS REPORT

IAMC achieved a historic success with its first-ever release of a comprehensive report on the status of minority rights violations in India, under the banner of the Alliance for Justice and Accountability (AJA), on May 23. No less significant aspect of the effort was the fact that the release event was held at Rayburn House Office Building, which is part of the U.S. Congressional complex, and was arranged for by the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission of the U.S. Congress. The event was highly successful with several civil society organizations, such as the Dalit American Coalition, Organization of Minorities From India, South Asian Solidarity Group and TwoCircles. The report received wide coverage in the Indian media, including in Hindustan Times, DNA, The Wire, etc. This report has also been sent to top Congressmen and women.
