Before coming to Yale in 2013, he was Distinguished Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Rutgers University. He writes about authoritarianism, propaganda, free speech, mass incarceration, and other topics for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Review, The Guardian, Project Syndicate and The Chronicle of Higher Education, among other publications.\nSuchitra Vijayan\nSuchitra Vijayan is lawyer, researcher and author of the critically acclaimed Midnight’s Borders: A People’s History of Modern India. Her book How Long Can the Moon Be Caged, Voices of Indian Political Prisoners, co-authored with Francesca Recchia, is forthcoming.\nAzad Essa\nAzad Essa is an award-winning journalist based between Johannesburg and New York. He is the author of Hostile Homelands: The New Alliance Between India and Israel.\nGuest Speaker\nDr. Aakashi Bhatt\nDr. Aakashi Bhatt is the daughter of jailed whistleblower police officer Sanjiv Bhatt. Mr. Bhatt’s affidavit in India’s Supreme Court played an important role in exposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s complicity in the 2002 anti-Muslim pogrom in Gujarat.\nImran Dawood\nImran is a survivor of Gujarat pogrom. In February 2002, Imran and his uncles Saeed Dawood, Shakeel Dawood and Mohammad Aswat were attacked and later burnt alive, while Imran managed to save himself.
