About Black History Month
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history.
IAMC’s advocacy takes its inspiration year-round from the bravery, dedication, and brilliance of the generations of Black Americans who have fought for the rights of all people in the United States to be treated with dignity and respect. We look to the shining examples of Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Angela Davis, W.E.B. Du Bois, the Little Rock Nine, Ruby Bridges, and countless other Black Americans before and after them who worked so endlessly and sacrificed so much in order to build a more equal country. We stand as allies with the Black American community and hope that we, too, can play a role in enacting change in the United States and abroad.
The Black History Month 2022 theme, “Black Health and Wellness,” explores “the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.”

Theme of 2022 for Black History Month
The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) (https://asalh.org/) is an organization whose mission is to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community.
This year ASALH has determined the theme to be ‘Black Health and Wellness’. Over the years, the themes reflect changes in how people of African descent in the United States have viewed themselves, the influence of social movements on racial ideologies, and the aspirations of the black community.
The theme for 2022 focuses on the importance of Black Health and Wellness. This theme acknowledges the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.
