Hindu extremist group threatens to kill Muslim vendors
Members of a Hindu extremist group, Kali Sena, were booked for forcing Muslim vendors out of a local bazaar in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, threatening to attack and kill them if they returned. The group also gave hate speeches urging local Hindus to evict Muslim tenants and attack Muslim shop owners.
“They threatened landlords and shop owners to evict tenants from other communities immediately, stating that if not done within seven days, they would forcibly remove them,” the police report against the individuals read.
Hindu extremists harass Muslim woman at festival
During a festival held in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, Hindu extremists filmed themselves chanting “Jai Shri Ram” (Glory to Lord Ram), a slogan commonly associated with mob lynchings, at a Muslim woman attending the festival. The extremists also taunted her with anti-Muslim slogans.
Hate speech against minorities rose by 74% in 2024, finds new report
A new report released by the US-based research project India Hate Lab (IHL) documented a 74% increase in anti-minority hate speech in India in 2024.
“On average, three hate speech events were held per day. This marks a 74.4% increase from 2023, when 668 such incidents were recorded. 1,147 (98.5%) speeches targeted Muslims—either explicitly (1,050) or alongside Christians (97),” the report stated, attributing the staggering rise in hate speech to India’s general elections last year.
