Overview
IAMC is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated Advocacy Associate to strengthen our presence in the nation’s capital. Working closely with the Advocacy Director, the Associate will execute IAMC’s strategic engagement with U.S. lawmakers, government agencies, think tanks, advocacy coalitions, and civil society, and support the planning and execution of high-impact public events. This role will focus on building relationships in both the executive and legislative branches, expanding civil society partnerships, and advancing IAMC’s advocacy priorities in the U.S.-India human rights space.
Key Responsibilities

- Coordinate, schedule, and attend meetings with Members of Congress, congressional staff, U.S. Department of State officials, and other key U.S. Government stakeholders.
- Prepare and present briefing materials, fact sheets, talking points, and advocacy memos.
- Track follow-ups and maintain detailed contact logs of meetings, communications, and outcomes.
- Monitor and analyze federal legislative and policy developments relevant to human rights, religious freedom, and civil liberties.
- Build relationships with think tanks, human rights organizations, advocacy groups, interfaith networks, and academic institutions to identify collaboration opportunities.
- Engage with civil society leaders, human rights advocates, and coalition partners to expand IAMC’s advocacy network.
- Plan and organize IAMC events including Advocacy Week, Congressional Briefings, seminars, workshops, and conferences.
- Secure high-profile speakers such as UN experts, USCIRF Commissioners, human rights defenders, and other prominent voices.
- Manage event logistics including venue, catering, audiovisual/videography, and printed materials.
- Identify and commission timely content for IAMC’s submissions to national and international forums.
- Review and approve advocacy materials and reports related to human rights in India.
- Monitor developments in India and the U.S. concerning Hindu nationalism and related ideological trends, and prepare timely briefs and talking points.
- Coordinate the design and production of outreach materials including banners, standees, flyers, and brochures.
- Support engagement with stakeholders in India including victims and survivors of rights abuses, journalists, lawyers, and political leaders.

Qualifications

- Based in or near Washington, DC, with reliable transportation for in-person meetings and events.
- Demonstrated experience in advocacy, policy, human rights, or related fields.
- Proven ability to work with diverse communities, including South Asian, interfaith, human rights, and civil liberties groups.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. policymaking processes, including congressional and executive branch structures.
- Familiarity with Capitol Hill, the State Department, and the U.S. foreign policy landscape preferred.
- Knowledge of Indian politics, particularly religious freedom, democracy, and Hindu nationalism.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including persuasive messaging.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities, with attention to detail.
- Deep commitment to pluralism, free speech, and social justice.

- Track and analyze developments related to: Legal frameworks and policy shifts in India impacting civil liberties and U.S. and international responses to rights violations in India
- Author research reports, briefing documents, op-eds, and fact sheets for diverse audiences including policymakers, media, academia, and civil society
- Support IAMC’s advocacy team with timely data, evidence, and contextual analysis for strategic campaigns
- Collaborate with journalists, academic institutions, and human rights organizations to amplify IAMC’s research
- Present findings in public forums, conferences, webinars, or expert panels when needed

- Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Political Science, South Asian Studies, Human Rights, Sociology, Law or a related field
- Familiarity with international human rights law, minority protections, and civil liberties frameworks
- Strong understanding of contemporary Indian politics, history, and society, especially in relation to religious minorities
- Deep knowledge of Hindu nationalism as a political and social movement, both in India and the diaspora
- Proven research, analytical, writing skills and ability to translate complex data into accessible insights
- Experience with qualitative and/or investigative research methods
- Experience working with advocacy or civil society organizations is preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to human rights, pluralism, and secular values
- Proficiency in Indian languages (especially Hindi or Urdu) is a plus
