The RSS was initially declared an unlawful organization in 1948 following the assassination of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse, an RSS member. Militants from the RSS were also part of a mob of over 150,000 Hindu extremists who violently demolished the Babri Masjid.
