Muslim man lynched to death by Hindu extremist mob over cow slaughter allegation

A 42-year-old Muslim man, Shahedin, died in a hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut after being brutally beaten up by a Hindu extremist mob accusing him of cow slaughter. The police have registered a case of unintentional murder against the attackers and have also filed charges of cow slaughter against Shahedin and his associates. 

Hindu militant mobs regularly attack Muslims over baseless accusations of committing crimes. These mobs, also known as cow vigilantes, assault and often lynch Muslims accused of transporting cattle or consuming beef. 

Muslim man dies under police custody in Bihar, family alleges police torture

A 30-year-old Muslim man, Hasibul Haq, died in a prison in Bihar’s Pothia under unclear circumstances. His family members have criticized police officials, citing inhumane treatment under police custody.

Haq was among three others who were arrested earlier this month over charges of robbery. He was reportedly beaten in jail, resulting in serious injuries. The family of Hasibul Haq has appealed to the Human Rights Commission, claiming that he was subjected to severe physical abuse, leading to his death. 

Hindu residents prevent Muslims from entering village to offer Friday prayers at mosque

In a village in Maharashtra’s Thane, Hindu residents barred Muslim worshippers from entering the village to offer Friday prayers. Roads leading to the mosque were blocked by large crowds, preventing Muslims from neighbouring areas from reaching their place of worship. The demonstrations took place in the presence of police officers, who allegedly stood by without intervening.

Hanuman Thombre, a Hindu supremacist politician fear mongered against Muslims by raising concerns over “Bangladeshis and Nigerians” in the area, and baselessly linking them to recent sexual assault cases in the region. 

Kashmiri vendors in Himachal Pradesh report harassment by local shopkeepers

Twenty-two Muslim Kashmiri shawl vendors in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur have filed a police complaint claiming that local shopkeepers are preventing them from selling their goods and pressuring them to leave the area. Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti blamed far-right groups for the harassment and urged officials to ensure the vendors’ safety. 

Last month, Hindu extremists harassed and threatened two Kashmiri traders, demanding that they either leave the state or chant the Hindu supremacist slogan “Jai Sri Ram.”
