Muslim man lynched to death over alleged phone theft in Jharkhand

A 21-year-old Muslim man, Samiul Sheikh, was beaten to death with sticks and then strangled by three Hindu men in Jharkhand’s Pakur. According to the deceased’s father, the men had accused Sheikh of stealing a mobile phone. Police have detained Suraj Marandi, Anil Hembram, and Babudhan Murmu for the lynching.

Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi won a third term after India’s general elections, there has been a surge in anti-Muslim hate crimes in north and eastern India.

Posters calling for boycott of Halal products put up in Hyderabad temples

A leader of the far-right Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rakshit Sagar Rachakonda, put up posters at various temples in Telangana’s Hyderabad calling for a boycott of halal products. Rachakonda then took to social media platform X to announce that he had put up posters reading, “Dear Hindus, Say No to Halal Products”.

“Halal” is a designation that can be applied not only to meat, but all produce. Despite this, halal products are often targeted and demonized as offensive to Hindu sentiments by the BJP and its ideological affiliates. The BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government in particular has imposed an arbitrary statewide ban of halal products, leading to raids and seizure of goods with halal certification labels on them.
