Muslim woman dies after police barge into her home searching for beef

A 55-year-old Muslim woman died from a panic attack in far-right BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district, after police officials stormed her residence, following a tip-off that beef was stored in her house. However, the police did not find any beef.

“The four police constables barged into our house and misbehaved with the women members of the family. They ransacked the household while we kept pleading. My mother had a panic attack due to the behavior of the cops. We took her to a local clinic, where the doctor pronounced her dead,” the son of the deceased said.

Uttar Pradesh government policy threatens action against critical coverage on social media

The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a controversial new digital media policy incentivising positive coverage about its work by social media influencers and digital platforms, while threatening legal action against content that it deems to be “objectionable” or “anti-national.”

The new policy mandates legal action against digital platforms or influencers who upload “objectionable content” on sites such as Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube. On the other hand, it has made the spread of propaganda lucrative for those sharing the “achievements” of the government.

The Opposition has accused the BJP government of trying to “brazenly capture” the digital media space through its new policy, which punishes criticism and encourages the publicity of its work.

In Amravati, Maharashtra, BJP leader T. Raja Singh also called for taking over historic mosques.
