Hindu militants, police harass Muslim woman for organizing prayers at her house
In BJP-ruled Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal, Hindu militants from the Bajrang Dal along with police officials, harassed and threatened a Muslim woman for offering Friday prayers in her home. They also threatened to chant Hindu slogans and hymns in her house the next Friday if the prayers didn’t stop.
Amid the increasing criminalization of Muslim symbols and practices by the BJP government, Muslims across India have faced criminal charges for offering prayers in public and private spaces.
Hindu neighbors protest after Muslim doctor purchases house
In BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad, Hindu extremist residents of a housing colony protested after a Muslim doctor purchased a house in the area, declaring that they would not allow a Muslim family to reside there. They demanded the cancellation of the property registration and urged civic officials to take back the house from the Muslim family.
Instances of religious discrimination in housing have been reported in India for many years.
Recently, Hindu extremists in Muzaffarnagar opposed the purchase of a house by a Muslim advocate in a predominantly Hindu neighborhood.
Court acquits Muslim man attacked, falsely accused of sexual assault by Hindu mob
A court in Madhya Pradesh acquitted a Muslim man, Taslim Ali, who had been accused of sexual harassment after being assaulted by a Hindu extremist mob in 2021. Taslim was brutally attacked and threatened by the mob for selling bangles in a Hindu-majority area. After the assault, the mob wrongfully accused him of sexually assaulting a minor. However, the court has now cleared him of all charges.
Muslim settlement demolished in Uttar Pradesh after Hindu extremists protest
In BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur, police and civic officials demolished a Muslim settlement following a protest by Hindu extremists, who claimed that the homes were built on land belonging to a Hindu crematorium by “illegal Muslim infiltrators.”
India’s Supreme Court recently banned the weaponization of demolitions as collective punishment against Muslims, declaring that any demolitions carried out without proper notice or legal permission amounts to contempt of court.
