IAMC Report: Transnational Repression: Modi Regime’s Targeting of Critics in the United States
The Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) has released a new report exposing how the Indian government has weaponized transnational repression (TNR) to silence critics in the United States. The report documents how Indian consulates and state-aligned actors have employed at least 9 of the 11 tactics recognized by the FBI as forms of TNR—including harassment, intimidation, surveillance, and threats to family members back home. These tactics have created a chilling climate of fear that undermines the First Amendment rights of Indian Americans, journalists, academics, and human rights defenders, pushing many into silence or self-censorship.
From the shocking testimonies of Kashmiri journalists like Masrat Zahra to the intimidation of Sikh, Muslim, and Christian diaspora communities, this report presents previously unpublished evidence of how the Modi regime is extending its authoritarian reach beyond India’s borders. It reveals how the Indian state’s campaign of silencing dissent at home has now become a global threat to democracy, civil liberties, and community safety—even within the United States.
