IMC-USA Condemns Attack on Babri Mosque site
July 5, 2005
Indian Muslim Council-USA, an advocacy group working towards protecting and promoting the pluralist and tolerant values of the Indian society, strongly condemned the armed attack on the illegal makeshift temple built on the site of the Babri Masjid.
According to news reports, 5 unidentified armed men attempted to raid the temporary structure that was built by Hindu extremists on the grounds of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, India. The Babri Masjid, a 16th century mosque, was demolished by militant Hindu mobs led by Mr. L. K. Advani on Dec. 6, 1992 and ensuing anti-Muslim violence left thousands of Muslims dead.
Dr. Shaik Ubaid, President of IMC-USA said that “the Indian Muslim community and its leadership has always desired a peaceful solution to the Babri Masjid issue and we condemn all forms of violence or terrorism.”
Referring to the call for protests by the Hindu supremacists, Dr. Ubaid expressed concern that this latest incident could be used by Hindutva-fascists to unleash another round of anti-Muslim pogroms. He said that, “the BJP and its Hindutva-fascist brethren have used such incidents as a pretext to revive their political fortunes by undertaking a genocidal campaign of murder and mayhem against the Muslims of India.” He called on the Central Government of India to swiftly move to prevent another Gujarat style genocide and undertake a prompt investigation into this attack to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Dr. Ubaid expressed hope that the Government of India will expeditiously move the Supreme Court to settle Babri Masjid issue saying that, “As long as this issue is allowed to fester, communal harmony will remain just a dream.”
