North Carolina Interfaith Groups Condemn Event Featuring Hindu Supremacist Leader
Morrisville, NC (July 11, 2025) — A diverse coalition of religious and civil rights organizations — including Muslim, Christian, Hindu, and Sikh groups — has issued a powerful joint letter calling for the cancellation of an event featuring Kajal Singhala (also known as Kajal Hindustani), a Hindu nationalist figure notorious for her violent, anti-minority rhetoric.
The statement, signed by the Triangle Interfaith Alliance, Hindus for Human Rights, the Council for American Islamic Relations (CAIR) NC chapter, Indian American Muslim Council, the Sikh Coalition, and Muslims for Social Justice, was sent to Morrisville Mayor TJ Cawley and members of the town council ahead of the event scheduled for Friday, July 11.
Singhala spoke at an event co-organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (VHPA), which has a long history of spreading anti-Muslim and anti-Christian hate, and also operates as the American wing of a violent Indian militant group. The letter’s signatories warn that hosting Singhala in Morrisville would legitimize her extremist ideology and endanger local communities, particularly Indian American Muslims and Christians.
“Allowing Singhala a platform in the United States — especially in an area like the Triangle, which prides itself on our diversity and our love for community — sends a dangerous message: that calls for violence and religious persecution abroad are acceptable forms of speech here at home,” the letter states.
The full text of the letter and list of signatories can be found below:
We, the undersigned representatives of Muslim, Hindu, and Sikh groups in North Carolina and beyond, strongly condemn and urge the cancellation of an upcoming event in Morrisville featuring Kajal Singhala, also known as Kajal Hindustani, a prominent Hindu extremist figure with a history of inciting violence with her hateful and harmful rhetoric. As people of faith and advocates for the rights of all, we believe this type of hate speech has no place in our communities.
The event, scheduled for July 11, 2025, is being co-organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America, which is designated as anti-Muslim and anti-Christian hate group, and is the American wing of an Indian militant group with an extensive history of anti-minority violence. The group, like Singhala, seeks to promote Hindu nationalism (Hindutva), described by Rutgers’ Center for Security, Race, and Rights as “a far-right political ideology distinct from the religion of Hindusim… that perpetua[tes] supremacist ideas and discriminatory conduct, especially against non-Hindu South Asians.”
Singhala was hosted at a similar event on June 29 in Dallas, Texas, which was condemned by over 70 civil society groups and 30 Christian faith leaders for promoting anti-minority hatred. A press release posted by one of the Dallas event’s cosponsoring organizations details how Singhala described Muslims as “jihadis”, ordered Hindus to economically boycott minorities, and called on her audience to associate with known Hindu militant groups that operate in India, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal.
Described by The Quint as a symbol of “hate politics,” Singhala is known for delivering hateful speeches targeting Indian Christians and Muslims, frequently using slurs and calling for violence, economic boycotts, and social and exclusion of religious minorities. She was arrested in April 2023 for a particularly vitriolic hate speech that sparked anti-Muslim violence in Gujarat state.
She regularly calls for boycotts against religious minorities, and has been quoted praising violence, telling her followers, “Non-violence is a delusion. It is a trap by our enemies.” One D.C.-based research organization, India Hate Lab, found that she gave more hate speeches in 2023 than any other Hindu nationalist figure. Out of her 35 total speeches, nine explicitly incited violence against Christians and Muslims.
This is who is being invited to speak in Morrisville. We, the undersigned, say no to this platforming of hatred in the name of the Hindu faith.
Allowing Singhala a platform in the United States — especially in an area like the Triangle, which prides itself on our diversity and our love for community — sends a dangerous message: that calls for violence and religious persecution abroad are acceptable forms of speech here at home. This event not only undermines American values of pluralism and tolerance, but also poses a threat to the safety and wellbeing of Indian American Muslim and Christian communities.
We call on event organizers and venue hosts to immediately cancel this event. We also urge elected officials, interfaith groups, and community leaders to show up, speak out, and take a stand against hate. By doing so, the Triangle can send a clear and united message: there is no place in our city for those who promote violence, bigotry, and division.
Signed,
Safa Ahmed, Associate Media Director, Indian American Muslim Council
Henry Jarrett, President, Triangle Interfaith Alliance
Ria Chakrabarty, Senior Policy Director, Hindus for Human Rights
Al Rieder, Manager, Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) NC
Mannirmal Kaur, Senior Federal Policy Manager, The Sikh Coalition
Manzoor Cheema, Organizer, Muslims for Social Justice
