Pegasus Exposé: The Narendra Modi Government Has A Lot Of Explaining To Do – By Maneesh Chhibber
The Narendra Modi government has a lot of explaining to do. A one-and-a-half page, wishy-washy, unsigned response to the latest exposé about the targeting of journalists, politicians and at least one Supreme Court judge by an “unidentified agency” using the Pegasus spyware can’t be the explanation acceptable from a government that wants citizens to have faith in it.
While, in 2019, the Supreme Court had dismissed a petition filed by RSS leader KN Govindacharya, seeking an independent probe, preferably by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into similar spying of Indian citizens, this time, one hopes, the response of the Supreme Court will be stronger. After all, as The Wire report suggests, one of its own could have been the target of the possibly illegal spying.
If a judge of India’s top Constitutional Court isn’t safe from such illegal and unconstitutional actions, one that affects the very foundation of our democratic and institutional integrity, how can common citizens feel secure?…
