Police beat Islamic scholar unconscious, mock his religious beliefs

An Islamic scholar was beaten to the point of unconsciousness by police officials during a routine bike check in Bihar’s Madhubani. He was also mocked for his religious beliefs and threatened by officers.

The victim reported that when he woke up, he found himself in a police car and was assaulted again with excessive force. Firoz said while he was being beaten, the police mockingly said “You pray to Allah, so call Him, only He can save you today.”

A detailed investigation by a prominent Indian magazine, The Caravan, has revealed that two high-ranking Indian army generals oversaw the torture and murder of Muslim civilians in the wake of a militant ambush in Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir. The incident, which occurred between December 21 and 22, 2023 was ostensibly aimed at capturing militants but reportedly turned into a mass torture event.

“In this story we have found solid evidence that the Indian Army tortured 25 civilians and killed 3 in a coordinated operation in the restive Jammu region on 22 December,” said senior journalist Jatinder Kaur, who wrote the investigative piece. Witness accounts also described brutal beatings, the use of chili powder, drowning, and electrocution, resulting in three civilian deaths. 

Officials demolish mosque, madrasa and graveyard after Hindu militants protest

In Maharashtra’s Pune, civic officials demolished a mosque, madrasa, and graveyard following complaints by Hindu militant groups Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, who baselessly alleged the structures were illegal and constructed without permission. 

India’s Supreme Court has banned the weaponization of demolitions as collective punishment against Muslims, declaring that any demolitions carried out without proper notice or legal permission amounts to contempt of court.

Five years after forced national anthem singing, court orders complaint against police

A court in Delhi has ordered the registration of a criminal complaint against a police official based on a complaint filed by a Muslim man who claimed to be among those forced to sing the Indian national anthem during the 2020 anti-Muslim pogrom in Delhi.

The incident relates to a video that had gone viral on social media, wherein a group of Muslim men was brutally beaten by the police while being forced to sing the national anthem. 23-year-old Faizan, who was part of the group, died 24 hours after his release from the police station due to custodial torture by policemen.
