At least 25 Muslims arrested, 2500 booked after violence over mosque survey

Police have arrested at least 25 Muslims, shut down the internet, closed schools, and tightened security in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal after five Muslim men were killed by police. The officers had fired on Muslims protesting a court-ordered survey of the historic Shahi Jama Mosque, a move demanded by Hindu supremacists to check for temple ruins underneath.

Police have booked around 2,500 people, including Muslim opposition leader Zia-ur-Rehman Barq. A prominent lawyer, Zafar Ali, was also detained by the police, immediately after a press conference where he alleged that he personally witnessed police firing at the crowd, refuting claims that protesters initiated the violence.
