IAMC Marks Gandhi Jayanti, Commends Voices of the Republic Conference for Reviving Gandhian and Nehruvian Legacies
Washington, DC (October 2, 2025) – On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), the largest organization of Indian Muslims in the US, joins millions around the world in honoring the life and vision of Mahatma Gandhi, whose commitment to truth, nonviolence, and justice remains a guiding light for humanity.
Gandhi’s principles of pluralism, inclusivity, and moral courage are urgently needed in today’s India, where democracy and secular values face unprecedented assault by the Hindu nationalist regime of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
IAMC is proud to commend the “Voices of the Republic” conference held in Washington, D.C. on October 1 and 2, which brought together scholars, activists, and policymakers to reflect on the enduring legacies of Gandhi and India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The conference underscored how the Gandhian and Nehruvian traditions of nonviolence, secularism, and social justice remain critical to renewing Indian democracy.
“At a time when India’s pluralistic fabric is under assault, Gandhi’s teachings remind us that peace and justice can never be separated, and that the measure of a nation lies in how it treats its most vulnerable,” said IAMC President Mohammed Jawad.
IAMC reaffirms its commitment to upholding the values of Gandhi and Nehru in the ongoing struggle for equality, justice, and communal harmony. On this Gandhi Jayanti, we call on people of conscience everywhere to recommit to the timeless principles of nonviolence, truth, and justice.
