IMC-USA welcomes the report; Banerjee Commission concludes that the Godhra train burning was an accident

March 03, 2006

Indian Muslim Council-USA, an organization dedicated to the protection and promotion of pluralism, welcomes the Justice Banerjee Commission’s conclusion that the February 27, 2002 blaze in the Sabarmati Express at Godhra was "accidental". The Sangh Parivar and the State government of Chief Minister Narendra Modi had blamed that the occurrence of mass scale ethnic cleansing of Muslims that followed the Sabarmati Express event as a reaction to the mischief by Muslims that had set the train on fire. The committee eliminated the ‘petrol theory’, ‘miscreant activity theory’ and ruled out the possibility of ‘electrical fire’.

Mr. Rasheed Ahmed, Acting President, IMC-USA while congratulating the Commission members said "This again proves that the pogrom that took place in Gujarat four years back was well planned and orchestrated. The perpetrators just used this incident as an excuse to further their agenda". He further hoped that "the Central and State government will now investigate who were responsible for planning and executing a statewide pogrom targeted towards an specific minority community." He also "expressed his sympathies with the families of those perished in the train burning"
