The hateful love ‘jihad’ conspiracy in India is going mainstream – By Rana Ayyub
In the year preceding the national elections in India in 2014, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi rose to power, India witnessed a brutal episode of communal carnage in the state of Uttar Pradesh. More than 60 people were killed, women were gang-raped, and more than 50,000 people were displaced, a majority of them Muslims. The violence was triggered by false rumors of a “love jihad”…. In recent weeks and days, the Indian right has been waging a campaign against any depictions of interfaith relations,…. These attacks keep feeding the dangerous “love jihad” conspiracy theory, the proponents of which seek to ultimately constrain and restrict the freedom of Hindu women and further demonize Muslims in India….

Nine months since the brutal and chilling communal violence in Delhi’s North-East district, fanatic Hindutva outfits allegedly continue to terrorise Muslim residents in some areas, and the police seems to be again indifferent. Several Muslim residents of Khajuri Khas, one of the affected areas in the February violence, alleged that on November 14 – Diwali night – a group of seven boys in the area gathered in lane no 29 in front of their local mosque and burst fire crackers, shouted communal slurs and threatened Muslims with dire consequences. One of the residents, Mehboob Alam, urged the boys to stop bursting firecrackers. He also called the Police Control Room for assistance. Some policemen turned up a few hours later and went away. Two weeks later, on November 27, Alam was arrested by police who claimed he was involved in the February riots….

Karnataka minister and BJP leader KS Eshwarappa has said the party will give tickets to any Hindu community, be it Lingayats, Kurubas, Vokkaligas, but never to a Muslim candidate. In a shocker, Rural Development Minister KS Eshwarappa said, “We might give the party ticket to any community of Hindus. Whoever we might give it to – maybe Lingayats, Kurubas, Vokkaligas, or Brahmins, but definitely it will not be given to Muslims.” The minister was talking about the upcoming Belagavi Lok Sabha bypoll, which he noted was a predominantly Hindu-dominated region, reported The New Indian Express….
