IMC-USA announces annual awards for excellence in services to humanity

Indian Muslim Council-USA, a US based advocacy group, has announced the much awaited list of its annual awards for excellence in services to humanity in different fields.
The awards will be awarded at the IMC-USA annual convention in Detroit on October 1, 2005 to be held at the Holiday Inn Fairlane, Dearborn. According to Mirza Rahmat Baig, President of IMC-West Coast, the awards for 2005 are:
Maulana Muhammad Ali Jowhar Award in Journalism
For best in-depth coverage of Indian Diaspora AND India-related issues in the US
Ruth Morris, Sun-Sentinel, Florida
Bahadur Shah Zafar Award
For promoting pluralism and communal harmony in India
Raju Rajagopal, Promise of India, CA
Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award in Humanitarian work
For self-less service towards the upliftment of the poor and the oppressed classes in India
Gujarati Muslim Association of America, Chicago
Altaf Hussain Hali Award in Humanitarian work
For self-less service towards the upliftment of Muslims in India
Syed Salman, Michigan
Tipu Sultan Award
For courageously serving India and India’s interests

IMC-USA’s 2005 annual convention will focus on ways in which the Indian Diaspora can contribute to the struggle for pluralism, social justice and economic equity in India. The full day event, with the theme Indian Americans: Activism for Better India, will be addressed by prominent scholars, historians, journalists, human rights activists and social scientists. Leaders and representatives of Dalit, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Muslim and Christian communities along with US human rights and interfaith groups will also address the convention.
Syed Ali, a member of the Board of Directors of IMC-USA, said, "There is tremendous enthusiasm for the convention among the Indian Diaspora". Asim Khan, the President of the Michigan chapter of IMC-USA and 2005 Convention Co-Chairman, reminded the delegates to pre-register before the convention.
