Muslim meat trader succumbs to injuries after torture by Uttar Pradesh police

A Muslim meat trader, Furkan, succumbed to his injuries in far-right Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli after he was reportedly tortured by police. In a video, family members point at torture injury on the deceased’s body.

Recently, police fired at two alleged “cattle smugglers” in Shamli amid an ongoing trend of violent attacks against predominantly Muslim cattle traders by law enforcement.

In far-right BJP-ruled Gujarat’s Nadiad, Hindu militant groups Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal took out rallies featuring inflammatory speech against Muslims and calling for violence against them. In Surat, Hindu supremacist influencer Kajal Hindustani delivered an inflammatory speech promoting fear and hate against Muslims.

In Lormi, Chhattisgarh, VHP leader Chandra Shekhar Verma called for killing “love jihadis and those who conduct religious conversions,” referring to Muslims. He also called on Hindus to arm themselves.

Police open fire at alleged “cattle smuggler,” victim sustains bullet wound

In BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur, police fired gunshots at an alleged “cattle smuggler,” who sustained a bullet injury in his legs. 

The incident is the latest in an ongoing trend of violent attacks against predominantly Muslim cattle traders by law enforcement. Over the last month, multiple instances of injuries have occurred due to police firing.
