Why Justice Kureshi’s Omission from Collegium List Raises Questions

The recent omission of Justice Akil Abduhamid Kureshi – one of the seniormost high court chief justices in the country – from the list of nine chief justices and judges of various high courts, cleared on August 18 by the Supreme Court collegium headed by CJI N.V. Ramana, continues to make headlines. Justice A.K. Kureshi had remanded Amit Shah (now Union Home Minister) in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the alleged fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, over a decade ago, in 2010. The elevation of Justice Kureshi had become a cause for concern in November 2018, when the Gujarat High Court Advocates Association had called for a strike to protest against his transfer to the Bombay High Court. Kureshi is said to be held in high regard by the Gujarat Bar Council and his transfer to Mumbai – at a time when he was about to be the Acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court – where he would be the fifth-most senior judge, caused much consternation and whispers that the powers that be were at work….

A video showing a top district official in Haryana asking policemen to ensure farmers who are protesting against BJP leaders get “head injuries” has surfaced on social media, drawing criticism from a wide section of people…. Some 10 people were injured Saturday after the state police lathi-charged a group of farmers who had stopped traffic on a highway while heading towards Haryana’s Karnal to protest against a BJP meeting, where Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, state BJP chief Om Prakash Dhankar and other senior leaders were present…. “It is very simple and clear, whoever he is, wherever he is from, no one should be allowed to reach there. We will not let this line be breached at any cost. Just pick up your lathi and hit them hard… It’s very clear, there is no need for any instruction, just thrash them hard. If I see a single protester here, I want to see his head smashed, crack their heads,” Mr Sinha is heard saying in the video. “Any doubt?” the SDM added in the end. “No sir,” the group of policemen shouted….

The police in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district have arrested two men for threatening a Muslim scrap dealer to chant “Jai Shri Ram” and forcing him to leave the village, PTI reported on Sunday. In a video of the incident that went viral on social media, two men could be seen manhandling the scrap dealer and forcing him to chant “Jai Shri Ram”, NDTV reported. “How dare you are doing business in our village,” one of the men tells the scrap dealer. “Chant Jai Shri Ram.” At this point, another person joins in and says: “What’s the harm in saying Jai Shri Ram?”… Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and Congress leader Kamal Nath criticised the government for being a “silent spectator” even as multiple incidents of assault on Muslim citizens were taking place in the state. “After Indore and Devas, now the incident in Mahidpur of Ujjain,” Nath tweeted. “Who are these people who are destroying our Ganga-Jamuni [shared culture] tradition and brotherhood? It seems like this is being done as part of an agenda.”…
